Ammolite is the very rare organic gemstone
Along with amber, pearls and coral, ammolite is one of the organic gemstones
In its raw state, ammolite is traded at prices ranging from US$30 to US$65 per carat ($150-325/g). It is soft and delicate. Therefore, he is subjected to special processing known to experts. This processing protects the stone. It is stabilized by being coated with a resin.
What is ammolite made of?
Ammolite consists primarily of aragonite, which comes directly from the original mother-of-pearl in ammonite shells. In addition to aragonite, calcite, quartzite, pyrite and other minerals occur in variable proportions. A number of trace elements are found in the shell itself (aluminium, barium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, strontium, titanium and vanadium).
Localities
Ammolite is mainly found in the Bearpaw Formation in Canada Province, Alberta through Saskatchewan to Montana (USA).
Other localities are Madagascar, Russia and partly England and Italy
Opalescent Ammonite from Madagascar
By fossilizing the mother-of-pearl from the aragonite-bearing shells of prehistoric ammonites. Ammolite is quite rare and therefore expensive. It occurs in smaller amounts than the well-known gemstones such as tourmaline and beryl.
How is ammolite formed?
As already mentioned, this opalescent ammolite is a very rare gemstone of organic origin. Most gemstones are minerals, but some, including amber, pearl and coral, are organic in origin. This means they formed from a biological process rather than a mineral process. Amber is made from hardened sap (tree sap) of pine trees over a period of 10 to 50 million years, pearls form in oysters and other molluscs over 5 to 20 years.
Ammolites are formed from the crushed shells of ammonites over a period of about 70 million years.
About 70 million years ago, the ammonites colonized the oceans. The ammonite (squid) seemed to be one of the most intelligent creatures. Like the dinosaurs, they too became extinct.
Spiritual meaning of ammolite
Among the Blackfoot tribes of Canada, the ammonite was known as "iniskim" or buffalo stone. Blackfoot tribal lands stretched from the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains of modern-day Canada and Montana in the United States. According to legend, the Indian tribe had no luck in buffalo hunting before the winter season. The tribe was starving. A tribesman dreamed of a gem that would attract the buffalo to her.
The next day, as she was collecting firewood, she heard a song coming from a cave. She went into this cave and found a colorful, iridescent stone, which she took back to her village. Soon after, a herd of buffalo emerged not far from their camp. The hunters had prey to feed their families. Since then it has been considered a lucky charm.
